While Australia has long experience of dealing with bushfires, the UK is now looking at how it can strengthen its own approach to wildfire risk.
The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has welcomed a report from the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, which sets out recommendations for improving wildfire preparedness.
NFCC Chair Phil Garrigan has called for permanent funding for specialist wildfire teams and equipment, a coordinated UK-wide aerial firefighting capability, better training and protective equipment, and more reliable water supplies.
The NFCC has also backed a review of the 2026 wildfire season, with the aim of turning lessons from this year into practical improvements before the next season begins.
The report highlights the growing demands on fire and rescue services and the need to make sure firefighters have the resources to work safely in difficult conditions.
It also stresses that tackling wildfire risk is not just the responsibility of emergency services. Government, landowners, businesses and the public all have a role to play in reducing risks and helping communities prepare.
A government wildfire summit is planned, providing an opportunity to discuss the recommendations and agree on next steps as the UK looks to improve its preparedness for future wildfire seasons.
