Industrial Decontamination Services UK (IDS UK) is establishing a new PPE decontamination facility in Northamptonshire, expected to open by the end of the year.
The facility will provide cleaning, decontamination, repair, tracking and lifecycle care for fire, emergency services and industrial PPE.
IDS has been providing specialist PPE decontamination services in Australia for more than 30 years, supporting emergency services with the cleaning and care of protective clothing and equipment.
Its low-temperature decontamination process is designed to protect the integrity and lifespan of PPE while providing thorough cleaning. The new UK facility will provide decontamination to NFPA 1850 standards, alongside asbestos-level decontamination.
The service will cover equipment including firefighting jackets and trousers, SCBA masks, boots and helmets.
For emergency services, PPE care is about more than simply cleaning equipment. Keeping protective equipment available, properly maintained and ready for use is an important part of operational resilience.
IDS will also provide live asset tracking, allowing teams to monitor equipment throughout its lifecycle. The company says its service will offer a 48-hour turnaround to help reduce downtime.
Australian customers have highlighted the benefits of the service, with Louise Christie, Emergency Services Logistics Coordinator, praising IDS's fast and reliable collection, decontamination and return process, which helps keep PPE available and teams ready to respond.
The move highlights how approaches to firefighter PPE are evolving across different markets.
For UK fire and rescue services, questions around contamination, equipment lifespan, cost and turnaround are becoming increasingly important. How PPE is cleaned and maintained can have a direct impact on how long it remains in service and how quickly it can be returned to firefighters.
As more services look at the full lifecycle of their protective equipment, the experience of international providers could offer useful insight into how PPE care can be managed more efficiently.
