The Power of Incremental Innovation in Firefighter PPE

Last year, response times to primary fires increased by 21 seconds compared with 2024. There are many reasons for this, from mobilisation, traffic and operational demand. However, for Fire and Rescue Services, where every second can affect an incident’s outcome, any element that could reduce avoidable delay should be evaluated.
Although crews across the UK generally turn out in under two minutes, many services are seeking to reduce this. Identifying small, repeated inefficiencies and addressing them in ways that are practical for crews must be a focus for many PPE manufacturers.
PPE has to provide robust protection in a broad range of hazardous environments, but also needs to support continuous confident movement. Footwear is an important part of this process, influencing not only protection but fit, stability, comfort and mobility throughout an emergency response.
Improving what really matters
Innovation does not always mean designing something completely new. In firefighting footwear, it can mean improving familiar components, such as the closure system, materials or protective elements.
When responding to an emergency, firefighters must fasten their footwear quickly and easily. A closure system, such as HAIX’s new OneTouch lacing system, is intuitive under pressure and creates a dependable and comfortable fit for the wearer, while laces and fastenings need to remain secure to avoid creating snagging or trip hazards.
Weight is another important factor. Firefighters may spend prolonged periods walking, climbing, carrying equipment and working across uneven terrain. Even modest reductions in unnecessary weight can support mobility and potentially reduce the physical burden during long shifts.
Crucially, lighter or faster to put on must never mean less protective. Any development should preserve the durability, thermal protection, flame resistance, grip and stability required for firefighting. The goal here is not compromise, but better balance between innovation and practicality.
Utilising real-life experiences in design
The most effective PPE is shaped by those who use it. Compliance with the appropriate standards is fundamental, but it does not fully capture the realities of a firefighter’s working day.
Wear trials, user feedback and ongoing engagement with firefighters can reveal the details that matter most in practice, acting as a driver for continuous refinement. In practice, incremental development can often produce the strongest results because it addresses the challenges firefighters encounter repeatedly.
These challenges largely stem from the changing climate and urban environment which places further demands on PPE. Product features such as waterproof materials, abrasion protection and supportive construction must work well together as one exceptionally-designed boot, to sufficiently adapt to these new environmental demands.
There is no single change that will resolve pressure on response times but incremental, user-informed improvements can help remove small barriers to readiness, supporting firefighters every day.
