London Recyling Plant Fire Investigation Under Way
An investigation has begun following a significant fire at a recycling depot in south-east London.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to the incident on Landmann Way in Bermondsey at approximately 5:30pm on Monday 8th June, with around 100 firefighters attending the scene. The blaze was brough under control shortly before midnight before crews continued operations overnight to fully extinguish the fire.
The fire involved a substantial quantity of refuse, as well as the roof of a warehouse unit. A van and a car were also destroyed and one man was treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service.
Sizeable plumes of smoke were visible across much of London on Monday evening, prompting advice for local residents to keep doors and windows closed. There was also disruption to rail services on nearby lines, though normal operation was resumed by the following morning.
In order to gain aerial visibility of the incident, firefighters utilised drones, as well as large turntable ladders and high-capacity hose lines to tackle the fire from multiple angles.
LFB Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield, who was present at the scene, praised the efforts of all crews, stating that firefighters had worked throughout the night to bring the incident safely to a conclusion.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
