Grenfell Anniversary Marks Ongoing Push for Accountability

Written by Hollie Brackstone | Jun 12 2026

This weekend marks nine years since the Grenfell Tower fire, a tragedy that claimed 72 lives and changed the conversation around building safety across the UK.

Survivors, bereaved families and members of the local community will gather in west London to remember those who lost their lives and reflect on the lasting impact the disaster has had on so many people.

This year's memorial is particularly significant as it is expected to be the last anniversary before Grenfell Tower is fully dismantled. For many families, the tower has remained a powerful symbol of remembrance and loss since the fire in June 2017.

Investigation moves forward

The anniversary comes as the criminal investigation into the disaster continues.

Police and prosecutors have confirmed that multiple organisations and dozens of individuals remain under investigation, with decisions on potential charges expected before the tenth anniversary next year.

Possible offences under consideration include health and safety breaches, corporate manslaughter, fraud and misconduct in public office.

While the investigation continues, many survivors and bereaved families have spoken about the long wait for answers and accountability.

Lasting impact beyond Grenfell

The Grenfell Tower fire had a profound impact on the fire safety sector, the construction industry and building regulation across the UK.

Public inquiries found serious failings in the design, refurbishment and regulation of the building, leading to widespread reviews of cladding systems, fire risk management and high-rise residential safety.

Since then, building owners, regulators and fire safety professionals have worked to address concerns around combustible materials and improve safety standards for residents.

Remembering those lost

The annual silent walk and memorial events remain an important opportunity for families, survivors and supporters to come together and honour the memories of the 72 people who lost their lives.

As the ninth anniversary approaches, the focus remains not only on the lessons learned since Grenfell, but also on ensuring those affected by the tragedy continue to be heard.

For many, the anniversary serves as a reminder that behind every discussion about regulation, reform and accountability are the families, friends and communities whose lives were changed forever.
