Glasgow Central Station Closed as Firefighters Tackle Nearby Blaze

Over 60 firefighters are tackling a large city-centre blaze which has caused the closure of Glasgow Central Station.

Emergency services were dispatched to Union Street on the afternoon of Sunday 8th March, with the fire understood to have taken hold in the ground floor of a commercial building, which has now collapsed.

Video footage (below, courtesy of STV) shows the fire has since spread to a building on the corner of Gordon Street and National Rail have said the station will remain closed until further notice.

The Voco Grand Central Hotel has also been evacuated and police have urged the public to avoid the area, with residents told to keep their windows closed for protection.

The Labour MSP for Glasgow Paul Sweeney said the partially collapsed building, which dates back to 1851, housed a vape shop where the fire started.

In a post on X, he said: "Sadly the building has now partially collapsed. I hope the fire can be contained. The corner of the Forsyth Building, as well as the Caledonian Chambers and Central Hotel seem unaffected. It’s a massive blow to Union Street with the restoration of the Egyptian Halls in prospect."
