Australian EV Fire Safety Breakthrough Gains Global Attention
A Queensland-made fire suppression system designed for electric vehicle (EV) parking bays has officially passed independent international testing, marking a major step forward for EV safety in Australia.
The system, known as EV FirePro, was created to deal with one of the biggest challenges in modern EV facilities - how to contain a battery fire quickly and safely. These incidents can burn intensely and reignite hours later, and standard sprinkler systems often aren’t enough.
Tested and Proven Overseas
With no dedicated EV fire testing sites in Australia, the company sent the system to Applus+ Laboratories in Spain. Testing confirmed that EV FirePro can stop heat from spreading, protect nearby vehicles, and keep temperatures under control during a battery fire.
Key results showed:
- Temperatures around the burning vehicle stayed safe
- Ceiling temperatures remained within controlled limits
- Heat radiation was kept low enough to prevent other cars or materials from catching fire
A Different Approach to EV Fire Control
Instead of spraying from above like a traditional sprinkler, EV FirePro activates from the ground to target the area where EV battery fires start. This helps slow the fire, reduces heat, and makes the scene safer for firefighters.
Fire safety specialists overseas have called the system one of the most practical solutions currently available for EV parking and fleet environments.
What It Means for Australia
As EV use increases across fleets, workshops, car parks, and new developments, purpose-built fire protection is becoming essential. Systems like EV FirePro can help:
- Reduce risk for fleet operators
- Support insurance and safety requirements
- Improve preparedness in busy vehicle storage areas
Growing Global Interest
Following the successful test results, the company is expanding internationally, with upcoming projects in Asia, the UK, and Europe. It has also gained recognition at home, being nominated for a major Brisbane business award.
A Strong Step Forward
For operators preparing for more EVs on their sites, EV FirePro offers a tested, Australian-developed option to improve safety and limit the impact of EV battery fires.
