Bushfire Outlook Puts Focus on Early Preparation

By
1 Minute Read

Fire authorities in Victoria are urging communities to prepare for bushfire season after the latest AFAC Seasonal Bushfire Outlook identified an increased risk of fire in several parts of the state.

The outlook, produced by fire and climate specialists including the Bureau of Meteorology, points to dry conditions and below-average rainfall as key factors contributing to the higher risk.

The Yarra Ranges are currently rated as having an ‘average’ risk. However, local Country Fire Authority (CFA) leaders are reminding residents that an average rating does not mean there is no risk of bushfire.

Conditions can change quickly

Local fire captains say signs such as dry leaves, drying grass and hot, windy weather can indicate that fire risk is increasing.

Residents can also reduce the risk around their properties by clearing away materials that could provide fuel for a fire.

The message is simple. Even areas with an average seasonal risk still need to be prepared.

Getting ready for bushfire season

Residents are being encouraged to check fire pumps, hoses and other equipment before the fire season begins, making sure everything is working properly.

Having a bushfire plan and keeping up with local fire warnings are also important steps.
