AusAlert: New Emergency Alerts Go Live

Written by Hollie Brackstone | Oct 8 2026

Australia has launched a new national emergency warning system designed to send urgent alerts directly to compatible mobile phones during emergencies.

AusAlert, which went live on 1 October, uses cell-broadcast technology to send warnings to people in affected areas within seconds. Unlike traditional SMS alerts, messages are broadcast through mobile phone towers, meaning people do not need to register their phone number or location to receive them.

For fire and rescue services, the system provides another way to reach communities when conditions are changing rapidly.

A new tool for fire emergencies

AusAlert could play an important role during bushfires and other fire-related emergencies, particularly when residents need to act quickly.

Emergency services can use the system to warn people about immediate threats and provide instructions, including when to evacuate or take protective action.

The system has two alert levels:

Priority alerts for serious threats, where people are advised to monitor the situation and take action if needed.
Critical alerts for immediate danger, which trigger a loud sound and vibration even when a phone is on silent or Do Not Disturb.

Critical alerts cannot be opted out of, highlighting the importance of the system where every second matters.

Supporting emergency preparedness

AusAlert does not replace existing emergency communication channels, but adds another layer to the way fire and rescue services can communicate with communities.

With bushfires becoming an increasing threat in Australia, the ability to deliver rapid, location-based warnings could support earlier action and help people make informed decisions during fast-moving incidents.

The system is currently available on compatible iPhones and Android devices, with coverage depending on mobile network availability and device compatibility.

For fire safety professionals, AusAlert is another example of how technology is changing the way emergency services communicate, helping warnings reach people faster when it matters most.
